(below is our daughter's expectation of marriage in her own words )
My view of marriage is one where my husband and I are best friends first, and build our relationship based on the tenets of Islam - especially trust, loyalty, and equality. I have always viewed marriage as an important responsibility - one where both husband & wife share their dreams & aspirations and help each other achieve them; where both spouses take equal responsibility, especially during times of difficulty & trials; and where both share a fairly similar outlook on life & the decisions that come with it.
Which is why, in my opinion, religious & personal compatibility should be the MAIN deciding factors in choosing a spouse. My family and I do not follow or give importance to any South Indian cultural practices that contradict the Qur'an & Sunnah. Which is why I would hope the same from the groom's side, irrespective of where they hail from.
For me, the marriage of our Prophet Muhammad (SAW) & Khadijah (RA) will always be the epitome of what a marriage should be. There was no ego or arrogance or inferiority complexes in that marriage. Instead, there was complete faith, loyalty, and an environment where each helped the other grow - in Deen & Dunya.
Unfortunately, I feel like marriage nowadays is viewed as a box that merely needs to be ticked off in a long list of items that need to be achieved in one's lifetime. But I believe it's not an achievement. It's something one should enter into with the hope & desire that you will spend the rest of your life with the person who will learn to love & respect you despite your flaws & shortcomings, and who will love you for the sake of Allah.
May Allah grant all of us spouses who are the coolness of our eyes, who are the cure to our inner fears & anxieties, and become our best friends in this Dunya only for us to reunite in the Aakhirah. Aameen.
